EVERY BRIEF SPARKS CREATIVITY

A client’s brief is rarely just a list of wants and needs. For a designer, it is an invitation to think creatively.

A storage room becomes a podcast studio. An outdated piece of art becomes part of a new design story. An awkward, unused corner becomes a purposeful part of the space.

These are the moments that spark creativity.

Whether we are designing a family home, a bridal boutique, a restaurant, or a corporate environment, every project begins with the same question:

What can we create here that the client never imagined, turning it into a conversation piece?

The answer is different every time. And that is what makes the process so interesting.

1. LISTEN BEYOND THE WISH-LIST

A good brief goes far beyond “I want a beautiful space.” It asks why.

How should the space feel? How will it be used? What is working or not working today? What routines, challenges, ambitions, or experiences need to be considered?

Listening carefully allows us to uncover the needs beneath the obvious requests.

A desire for a larger kitchen might really be about bringing the family together. A request for a more sophisticated workplace might be about creating an environment that inspires collaboration and reflects a company’s identity.

The brief gives us the starting point. Listening reveals what the client is really asking for.

Back in 2013, we were asked to transform an existing office into a formal wear & bridal boutique. The vision was unmistakably luxurious, but we also had to work within the constraints of the existing flooring and layout.

The bridal lounge needed to feel private and intimate—a place where a bride could step away from the bustle of the boutique and feel truly special.

The challenge wasn't simply to make the space more beautiful. It was to understand the experience the client wanted to create and find a way to achieve it within the space we had.

2. DESIGN THE UNEXPECTED WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Once we understand the goals, creativity becomes a problem-solving tool.

We translate the brief into spatial planning, materials, colour, lighting, furniture, architecture, and detail. Every decision has a purpose, even when we're working with a type of space we haven't designed before.

In 2017, for example, a client wanted to surprise her husband by transforming a storage room into a podcast studio.

A storage room isn't exactly where you would expect a studio to begin but that's where the fun starts.

We had to look beyond what the room was and imagine what it could become, creating a functional recording environment within a space that had originally been designed for something completely different.

That same approach applies across every project.

In a commercial space, creativity might mean selecting finishes that can withstand heavy use while still creating a memorable brand experience.

While in a home, it might mean designing a kitchen around the way a family actually gathers or finding a new purpose for something the client already owns.

The goal is always the same: seeing the potential within the challenge.

3. DETAILS THAT MATTER TRANSFORM THE SPACE

Sometimes the most successful design solutions are the ones that seem simple once they're finished but the behind-the-scene work designing it is far more than anticipated, it involved coordination between two fabricators and four suppliers.

For one client, we created a small breakfast counter where two people could comfortably sit and have their morning cereal, while also creating separation between the kitchen and living room.

The solution was a custom piece with a lower cabinet and raised counter—carefully designed around the swing of the refrigerator door.

It wasn't a dramatic architectural element. It was a small, thoughtful solution that made the entire space work better.

It fit like a glove.

And that's often what we're looking for: those moments where function, aesthetics, and the realities of everyday life come together seamlessly.

The strongest interiors don't feel like they belong to a designer. They feel like they belong to the people who use them.

That's why I don't believe creativity is limited by a particular project type or a signature aesthetic. A residential home and a commercial environment may have very different requirements, but the creative process begins in much the same place: listen, understand, question, and find the possibilities.

The client’s brief gives us the parameters. Our role is to push those parameters creatively—to find solutions that are beautiful, functional, personal, and considered.

Because ultimately, great design isn't about designing for a category. It's about designing for people.

And when we listen closely enough, even the most unexpected request can become the starting point for something extraordinary.
